For those of us living in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, having an efficient home heating system is a necessity. If your heating system is faltering, then it is not necessarily time for a replacement. We have compiled a list of three common causes of poor home heating system performance that are easily correctable, but which may be best diagnosed and serviced by a professional HVAC contractor.
1. Dirty Filters
Dirty and clogged filters are common problems that tend to be easy to detect and easy to repair. Most heating systems require a monthly filter change, and if they aren’t changed out as frequently as they are designed to be they can clog up easily, causing the equipment in the heating system to fail, raising the price of your utility bills, and in some cases putting your health at risk.
2. Air Flow Problems
Balance in HVAC air flow is essential for proper heating, cooling, and ventilation in your home. To find out if you have a balanced air flow, walk through your home and observe whether there are any areas which seem too warm or too cold. Make sure that all of your air registers are open and that none of them are blocked by furniture or a wall hanging. Try adjusting the levers on air registers in rooms that you determine to be too cool or too warm. If this does not work, then hire an HVAC contractor to take a look at your system and make the AC and furnace repairs you need.
3. Pilot Control Problems
Heating system pilot and ignition control problems are fairly common, resulting in the emission of only intermittent heat, if any. There are several troubleshooting tips that consumers and contractors alike can follow to get their pilot lights ignition controls working properly again, but major AC and furnace repairs should be left up to only experienced HVAC contractors.
