What IS a Home Energy Audit? (part 1 in our series)

Last updated 7 years ago

You may have heard of a home energy audit, but do you really know what it is, what it entails, why you need one, and how you can benefit?  Not many people do, so we thought we would take some time to explain the home energy efficiency audit in detail in our series of informative articles.

What is a Home Energy Audit?

A home energy audit is the first step you can take to determine how much energy your home consumes, how much it should consume, and evaluate the measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient.  The tests used in Blue Dot Service's home energy audit process will show you where your home is leaking energy, how healthy your air is, and how you could make your home not only more comfortable, but also more energy...and cost...efficient.

Our energy audit professional will start by asking you overall questions about your home:  Do you have hot and cold spots? Do you feel your air is not circulating very well? Do any rooms feel clammy when the air conditioner is running? Does there seem to be an excess of dust or spider webs in a particular area of your home?  Do any rooms smell moldy or musty?  All of these answers could present our professional with "red flags" to carefully investigate.

Our home energy audit certified professional will then inspect your heating and cooling equipment, ductwork, insulation, filtering devices and more.  We will also perform a Blower Door Test to evaluate air leakage in your home, and recommend where improvements can be made.  All homes should have some leakage, but excessive leakage could result in uneven temperatures throughout the house, wasted energy, excessive dust, cold drafts, dry air in winter, and clammy air in the summer. On the other hand, if your home is TOO air tight, you may create unhealthy indoor air and risk your family to infections and other harmful bacteria in the air.

The professional will then go through your home using an infrared camera to show you hot and cold spots.  These hot or cold spots will help to reveal where energy is being wasted, and thus, the areas that need improvement.

Following the entire home energy audit service, the auditor will give you a customized report of the findings, as well as discuss the energy inadequacies in your home. The auditor may also suggest minor and/or major improvements to resolve these inadequacies.  The end result?  A more energy efficient home that is healthier and more comfortable for you and your family members.
