The summer months bring great weather for enjoying the plethora of outdoor activities that Maryland has to offer, but with June, July, and August comes hot, humid weather. Suffering through these months with a broken or malfunctioning air conditioning unit can be uncomfortable at best.
While many of us may not give our AC systems much thought during the winter, performing a little preventative maintenance in the cooler months can help save you from more costly air conditioning repair in the future and can lower the cost of your monthly energy bills.
- According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the most important task to ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner is to clean or replace the air filters regularly. Keeping the filter clean can lower your energy bill by 5 to 15 percent, and will help maintain the health of the air conditioner. Aim for cleaning or replacing the filter every month or two when the AC is in use.
- Beyond the filters, another key to preventative maintenance to avoid AC repair is cleaning the coils. The condenser coil, located on the outside unit that houses the compressor, should be cleaned as often as needed. This coil can collect dust and debris, which can usually just be dusted out by hand.
- Located directly above the blower motor in the indoor unit, the evaporator coil should be inspected and cleaned annually and should be cleaned with a commercial AC coil cleaner. While this task is typically be done by a homeowner, if it seems a bit daunting, you may want to call a professional HVAC contractor for assistance.
- Before the hot weather hits, perform a test drive—run your air conditioner for about 20 minutes to see if it needs any AC repairs. This way, you can call an HVAC contractor for help before you're stuck in the sweltering heat of mid-summer.
