How to Care for Your AC between Scheduled Maintenance Appointments

Last updated 6 years ago

Maintaining your air conditioner is a great way to increase efficiency, minimize major repairs, and improve your home's indoor air quality.  Scheduled maintenance appointments are the easiest way to ensure your AC is always in good shape and to make sure a problem is never getting out of hand.  It’s best to have a professional maintain your air conditioner before the beginning of the hot months to be sure it will be in good working order when you need it most. Let's look at how you can care for your AC between appointments.

Change the Filter

Changing the air filter regularly is a great way to ensure that your HVAC will run efficiently and the air you're breathing is clean.  In order to do this you'll want to buy the correct size filter. If you're unsure, always ask your HVAC contractor.  He or she will also be able to show you how to change the filter on your own, so that you can breathe easily in between your scheduled maintenance.

Keep the Outdoor Unit Clean

One of your more basic maintenance needs will be to keep the outdoor air conditioning unit clean.  This will prevent the filter from becoming overly contaminated and will keep debris from interfering with the performance of your air conditioning.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats allow you to control the operation of your HVAC, so that it's never running when it doesn't need to be or when you are not home.  This helps reduce unnecessary wear and tear on your HVAC unit, allowing it to run well for years to come.
